William Matthews (b. 1949)

Lot of six large charcoal drawings: studies for "The Colorado Pioneers" Commission; a) Ute Elder, b) Cowboy, c) Miner, d) Trapper, e) Merchant, f) Pioneer Mother. Each is signed and titled, each measures 56” x 29” and all are framed alike to 69 1/2" x 39 1/2".

The works, all charcoal on paper, served as preliminary studies for a commission from the City of Denver’s Public Art Program. The six large-scale watercolors were installed on permanent display in the Denver Convention Center, which boasts on its website: “Mr. Matthews’s paintings convey a thematic viewpoint of the various people and cultures that have informed Colorado’s rich history.” Matthews modeled the facial features of the figures after his family and friends, including himself.
