A Fine Northwest Coast Canoe Figure
Large and impressive Northwest Coast carved cedar figure of a seated man with his hands crossed at his lap. Green, yellow, blue and black pigment remains, with the yellow being particularly bold. The bottom of the figure indicates that it was once affixed to something else, and it is thought that this was perhaps a canoe ornament. Regardless, the figure is striking, managing to be both calm and menacing simultaneously. Almost 3 feet tall with the stand, the figure measures 30” tall, by 11” wide. Circa late 19th century. Custom stand included.
Lot 156, Brian Lebel's Cody Old West Auction - June 22, 2019. Santa Fe, NM.
