Large Santo Domingo Dough Bowl by Effie Rosetta

6,500.00

Lot 186

A massive Santo Domingo pottery bowl with interior and exterior classic black painted designs. Traditional cream slip and a red clay underbody. The outside design features a band of repeating stars capped with another band of repeating elements of a floral nature. The inside is quite unusual, with two large geometric devices facing one another, beneath a scallop-painted border. Signed "effie" and "rosetta" on opposite sides along the lower edge of the bowl, and "S.D.P." (for Santo Domingo Pueblo) is painted prominently on the bottom. An impressive 19" wide by 9" tall. Circa 1920s.

From Jack Slaughter, to current owner, with oral history that the bowl was acquired in approximately 1930 by John Bull & Co., Sheffield, England.

Collection of Jim and Jane Carpenter, Colorado.
