Lot 214

Extremely rare, production-used, matte painting from “Have Gun - Will Travel.” Featuring Paladin’s headquarters, the Hotel Carlton. Framed to 21 ½” x 28”. Moving film footage of a street filled with cowboys, wagons and people would be blended with the still image to give the illusion of a bustling street in San Francisco. This particular painting was used for Season 4 of the classic show.

Provenance: From Pacific Title Company, Hollywood, CA to current owner.

Matte paintings were used by filmmakers as a kind of “set” over which they superimposed moving film images, thus negating the need to film on location. The success of the affect was determined by the skill level of the filmmakers and technicians blending the images. Wikipedia has an interesting and detailed explanation of how matte paintings were employed, contemporary uses, and their digital replacements. It also lists iconic and notable matte paintings such as Dorothy’s approach to the Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz.”

He is an expert chess player, poker player, and swordsman. He is skilled in Chinese martial arts and is seen in several episodes receiving instruction and training with a Kung Fu master in San Francisco. He is highly educated, able to quote classic literature, philosophy, and case law, and speaks several languages.”
